“The Kingdom and The Umbrella” as the theme of Indonesia’s Umbrella Festival 2022

Indonesia’s Umbrella Festival 2022 or Festival Payung Indonesia (FESPIN) 2022, was held on 2nd to 4th September 2022, at Mangkunegaran Palace. The 9th FESPIN has raised the theme “The Kingdom and The Umbrella”. FESPIN is an event that based on the publics participation, which keep progressing, to grow and to share the collective creativity of the community, and also committed to preserve the Indonesian umbrella traditions.

There are 81 art groups and creative communities from 50 City in Indonesia and foreign country, e.g., Thailand, Spain, and India participated in the 9th FESPIN. The participant from Sankhampaeng Culture Centre, Thailand especially participated in the event as a form of commitment of cooperation between FESPIN and Bo Sang Umbrella Festival (Chiang Mai) that had been established since 2018.

The opening ceremony of the 9th FESPIN started with “Nusantara Umbrella” Parade from Ngarsopuro Street as starting point and finished in Mangkunegaran Palace, then continued with the symbolic opening of the umbrella as a mark of the festival had officially opened. Book entitled “Payung Tradisi Nusantara” is also launched on the festival, the book is a collective participation of 29 writers from all over Indonesia and Peter Carey, a British Historian who specialized in the modern history of Indonesia, and Java in particular.
