Wisma Batari was originally the main building among several pavilion structures located on its right and left sides. During the Dutch colonial period, it functioned as a residential house. In the Japanese occupation era, it was repurposed as the headquarters of the Kempetai (Japanese military police). After Indonesia’s independence, the building complex was once used as the office of the Indonesian Batik Cooperatives Association (Gabungan Koperasi Batik Indonesia or GKBI) in Surakarta.
Most of the structural changes occurred at the rear of the building, while the front part has been largely preserved. In addition to a canopy that strongly reflects colonial architectural style, the front veranda serves as a transitional space leading into the main meeting room. Rows of iron columns, typical of colonial buildings, can be seen lined up between large pillars.
