Looking at its design, the clock monument in front of Pasar Gedhe tends to be minimalist. Its brown and white paint gives a simple impression, at least compared to other monuments like the Cembengan monument. Its uniqueness lies in the wall clocks located on each side, which is very different from Big Ben in London. This monument is not as large or grand. Not many know exactly when the monument, standing in the middle of the intersection of Jl. Urip Sumoharjo, was built. According to a 1995 inventory by Bappeda Solo, the monument was established on the initiative of Paku Buwono (PB) X, along with the Gladak Lamp Post Monument.
Another version states that the monument was erected before Pasar Gedhe itself was built during PB X’s era, when clocks were added to the monument walls. This refers to the function of similar monuments in regulating traffic at road intersections. However, what is certain is that placing wall clocks in the city center shows the idea of smart city planning during the reign of PB X (1893–1939).
