Tugu Cembengan

The Cembengan Monument is one of the historical monuments in Solo City. It is located on Jalan Kolonel Sutarto, Jebres, Surakarta. The Cembengan Monument was built during the reign of Sri Susuhunan Paku Buwono X, who ruled from 1839 to 1939. The name “Cembengan” comes from the Chinese prayer ritual called Ching Bing, which is a traditional Chinese ceremony honoring ancestral spirits. This ritual was performed by Chinese laborers working in sugar factories. The Ching Bing ritual was held at the beginning of the sugarcane harvest season as a sign to start the sugarcane milling process used to produce sugar.

Over time, the Ching Bing or Cembengan tradition began to be carried out with a Javanese nuance when the aristocrats started to enter the sugar business, one of whom was Mangkunegara IV, the owner of the Tasikmadu and Colomadu sugar factories. In addition, the Cembengan Monument serves as a directional marker toward the Chinese cemetery (Bong) located northeast of Sebelas Maret State University (UNS).
