Taman Balekambang Surakarta

Balekambang Park is one of the designated Cultural Heritage Sites in the city of Surakarta, based on the Mayor’s Decree No. 646/1-2/1 of 2013. The name Balekambang originates from the Kresna Gugah episode in the Baratayuda, which refers to a small island-like place located in the middle of a flower garden. The park is also known as Partini Tuin, named after one of the granddaughters of Mangkunegara V. According to an inscription found on the fence surrounding a banyan tree, the park was built on Wednesday Kliwon, October 26, 1921, to commemorate the 40th day after the birth of Princess Gusti Kanjeng Ratu Timur, daughter of Mangkunegara VII. The construction was witnessed by organizations such as Narpawandawa, Budi Utama, Jong Java, PGHB, Setya Tresna, Tresna Saudara, and Padvinder.

Balekambang Park was part of an urban planning initiative by the Mangkunegaran government to maximize the potential of the water source from Umbul Manahan. This water source was later channeled from Balekambang Park to Puro Mangkunegaran after a canal was successfully constructed along the edge of the Solo–Yogyakarta railway line in 1928. On the eastern side of the park, a small forest with a swamp full of carp fish was created, known as Partinah Bosch. The garden area was planted with various types of trees such as orange, guava, jirak, nutmeg, pakel, mango, and others. Today, Balekambang Park still functions as a green open space and also serves as a venue for art and cultural activities.
