Balapan Railway Station consists of two terminals (emplacements): the southern and northern sections. The southern emplacement has five railway tracks and is primarily used for passenger services, while the northern emplacement features seven tracks and is generally used for freight services.
The northern part of the station was constructed in 1870 by the Nederlandsch Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (NIS) on land owned by the Mangkunegaran Palace. This makes it one of the oldest major railway stations in Indonesia, following Semarang Tawang Station.
The southern building was designed in 1927 by Herman Thomas Karsten, a renowned architect known for his Indische architectural style, blending European and Javanese design elements.
