Patung Slamet Riyadi Surakarta

Ignatius Slamet Riyadi was one of Indonesia's National Heroes, born in Solo on July 26, 1927. He served in the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and held the rank of Brigadier General (posthumously). He played a pioneering role in the establishment of the Army Special Forces Command (KOPASSUS). Slamet Riyadi began his education at the Hollandsch-Inlandsche School (HIS) in 1940 and continued at MULO afd B. He later pursued higher education at the Maritime Academy, where he earned a navigation certificate.

On March 5, 1942, Solo came under Japanese control during the invasion. Witnessing the suffering and deaths caused by the occupation, Slamet Riyadi felt compelled to resist. He escaped from a Japanese wooden ship and formed a resistance force composed of former PETA and Heiho youth. This force was organized to reclaim political and military control of the cities of Solo and Yogyakarta.

His courageous efforts led to his appointment as Battalion Commander of Regiment I, Division X. On November 4, 1950, Brigadier General Slamet Riyadi died in action, and his remains were buried in Ambon.
