The statue of the poet Ronggowarsito is located in the courtyard of the Radya Pustaka Museum in Surakarta, which was inaugurated on November 11, 1953, by the first President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ir. Sukarno. The construction of the Ronggowarsito statue was intended to commemorate his extraordinary literary works, many of which are part of the museum’s collection. He was a renowned poet known for his works such as Kalatidha, Jayabaya, Sabdajati, Pustaka Raja Purwa, Sukmalelana, and many others. His literary works became widely known and even gained international recognition.
Ronggowarsito, whose childhood name was Bagus Burhan, was the grandson of the famous poet Yosodipura II and served as the principal poet of the Surakarta Sunanate. He was born on March 14, 1802. During his youth, he was known for being rebellious, prompting his grandfather to send him to an Islamic boarding school (pesantren) in Ponorogo to study under Kyai Imam Besari. After returning to Surakarta, Bagus Burhan was adopted as a grandson by Panembahan Buminoto (the younger brother of Paku Buwana IV). In 1819, he was appointed as a secretary (carik) at the Kadipaten Anom and received the title Mas Panjanganom.
In 1821, Bagus Burhan married Raden Ayu Gombak and later followed his in-laws to Kediri. It is said that from Kediri, accompanied by Ki Tanujoyo, he traveled to Bali to study ancient Hindu manuscripts.
