The history of Sriwedari Stadium dates back to the reign of Paku Buwono X, during the years 1932–1933. It was the first stadium ever built in Indonesia. The construction was initiated at the suggestion of R.M.T. Wongsonegoro, while the design and planning were entrusted to Mr. Zeyman and R. Ng. Tjondrodiprodjo. The stadium was intended to accommodate native athletes. From September 9 to 12, 1948, Sriwedari Stadium in Solo hosted the first National Sports Week (PON). Today, Sriwedari Stadium serves as the PON I Monument and still functions as a sports stadium. The original PON I commemorative monument has since been replaced; a banyan tree now stands on its former site, and a new monument commemorating the Asian Para Games has been built to the west of it.
