This monument was inaugurated on November 4, 1974 by Major General Jasir Habroto, the Commander of Military Region IV/Diponegoro at the time. It was built to commemorate the struggle of young men and women in defending independence against the Dutch.

The bravery of the fighters and the cruelty of the colonial army are partly depicted in the dioramas carved at the base of the monument. This monument serves as a reminder and educational medium to recall the battle that took place in Surakarta.
