Kampung Baluwarti is a residential area designated for Sentana Dalem (royal family members) and Abdi Dalem (palace servants). The area is divided into several specific regions, including:
A. Wirengan
Located from the western and eastern gates (Gapit Gates) to the southern gate. Wirengan comes from the word wireng, meaning traditional Javanese dance performers or wayang orang dancers. In the past, it was the residence of royal family members and palace servants responsible for dance and entertainment. The Abdi Dalem Wirengan also had a special role in guarding the Gunungan (ritual offerings) during the Grebeg ceremonies. These guards would walk alongside the Gunungan and perform the tayungan dance along the way.
B. Lumbung
A storage area for the palace’s food supplies, located to the east of the Kedhaton (palace center).
C. Carangan and Tamtaman
Located east of the palace, these were the homes of palace soldiers. The Tamtama and Carangan soldiers were tasked with guarding the king and the palace, ensuring that incidents like the assault on the Kartasura palace would not happen again.
D. Kasatriyan
Located west of Tamtaman, this was a gathering place for royal sons and palace servants to conduct various activities, such as scouting under the group Truna Kembang Zaman during the reign of Sunan Paku Buwana X.
E. Sasana Mulya
Located west of the northern gate (known as Gapit Supit Urang or Bajranala Utara Gate). It was once used by the kings and their subordinates for ceremonial gatherings. Today, it serves as a wedding venue. It was also previously used as the office of the Central Java Cultural Center (PKJT) and the Indonesian Academy of Karawitan Arts (ASKI).
F. Gambuhan
Located north of the Butulan (hidden) gate on the west side, this was the residence of palace musicians (Abdi Dalem Niyaga) and Gendhing (traditional Javanese music) experts.
G. Gondorasan
Located east of the palace, this area was home to female palace servants, led by Nyi Lurah Gandarasa.
H. Sekullanggen
Located south of the palace, also a residence for female palace servants, led by Nyi Lurah Sekullanggi.
I. Ndalem Pangeranan
The residence of the princes.
