During the reign of Paku Buwono X, there was a plague of the plague disease in 1929. The center for handling the disease was located in Lojiwetan, which was later repurposed as the Pentecostal Church.

Poor sanitation and the large number of rats carrying the disease caused this plague outbreak, which began around the Jebres Station area. At that time, the plague virus was a very dangerous epidemic. Many residents who were infected showed symptoms described as "sick in the morning, dead by evening; sick in the evening, dead by morning," a phenomenon known as 'pageblug.'
