The Gladag Gate is located north of the square and serves as the entrance to the Kasunanan Surakarta Palace. This gate was built by the European community residing in Surakarta as a tribute and commemoration of the 64th birthday of the Sunan, which fell on January 3, 1929.

The design for the gate was the result of a competition held by a commission consisting of Europeans. The design chosen for the gate was directly selected by Sunan Pakubuwono X. The winning design was created by Tuwan Schenkenberg van Nierop from Surabaya, who took second place in the competition, while the first prize went to Tuwan Cleton from Yogyakarta. The construction of the gate was completed in 1930.
