The Former UPD Parking Office is a historical building that forms an integral part of the Pasar Gedhe Hardjonagoro complex. The market itself was designed by renowned Dutch architect Ir. Herman Thomas Karsten in 1927 and completed in 1930. It was officially inaugurated on January 12, 1930, by His Majesty KGPAA Paku Buwono X, the King of the Kasunanan Surakarta Palace.
Pasar Gedhe stands as a symbol of harmonious collaboration between Paku Buwono X and Karsten, who deeply respected local Javanese culture. The 1927 renovation transformed it into the first two-story market building in the archipelago (now Indonesia), setting a precedent for modern market architecture.
This market area is considered part of the historic urban landscape of Solo, linking the royal palace area and the Chinatown district in Balong Village. The cultural interaction in this space was further strengthened by the appointment of Tjan Khay Sing as the head of Pasar Gedhe's management. His descendants later adopted the surname Hardjonagoro, highlighting their deep-rooted legacy in the market's history.
