The history of SMPN 10 Surakarta is closely linked with the existence of SMPN 3 and SMPN 5 Surakarta. All three schools were originally part of the Mangkunegaran Palace estate. On July 1, 1927, the school was officially inaugurated as a girls’ secondary school called Van Deventer School by Gusti Kanjeng Ratu Timur, together with Mangkunegara VII. On the same day, a school named HIS Siswa, which later became SMPN 5, was also established.
Mangkunegara VII had a strong vision of enlightening the nation through education. As a result, he built many schools, especially elementary schools. His close relationship with Mr. Conrad Theodor van Deventer, a Dutch ethical policy figure, inspired him to name the girls’ secondary school (for ages 12–15) after Van Deventer. The school focused on teaching domestic skills for young women, including cooking, sewing, ironing, embroidery, and batik-making. His uncle, Mangkunegara VI, had earlier pioneered modern basic education through a school called Siswarini.
According to the Government Decree of the Republic of Indonesia No. 1254/B/50, issued in 1950, the former Van Deventer School building was officially designated as the educational facility for SMPN 3 and SMPN 5 Surakarta.
