Dalem Prangwedanan was originally built as the residence of the crown prince. As its name suggests, Prangwedanan refers to the title held by a Mangkunegaran leader before receiving the title Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Adipati Arya (K.G.P.A.A). The building combines a traditional Javanese house structure with European decorative elements. Its main architectural components consist of the Pendhapa (a pavilion), Pringgitan (a connecting space between the pavilion and the main house), and Dalem Ageng (the main house). Each of the components is distinguished by a different roof form. The Pendhapa features a Jogjo Gajah Njerum roof. The Pringgitan has a limasan roof, while the Dalem Agung uses the classic Joglo form. A set of gamelan, a traditional instrument, named Kiai Lipur Tambaneng, is preserved in the Pendhapa of Dalem Prangwedanan. One of its components bears the inscription 1729 AJ (1802 AD), corresponding to the reign of K.G.P.A.A Mangkunegara II.
Although no record has been found regarding the exact year Dalem Prangwedanan was established, it is believed to have been built during the reign of K.G.P.A.A Mangkunegraa IV for his son, R.M. Sunito or K.P.H. Prabu Prangwedana. Dalem Prangwedanan served as a residence for a prince or ruler during the period when he still held the title of Prabu Prangwedana.
In the 20th century, particularly during the reign of K.G.P.A.A Mangkunegara VII, the Pendhapa of Dalem Prangwedanan was used as a reception area and a venue for formal cultural events. However, after Indonesia’s independence, Dalem Prangwedanan no longer served its original function as the residence of the crown prince. Today, the rear area is still occupied by the members of the royal family (sentana dalem), while the Pendhapa is used for various family gatherings and public events.
