After Ambarawa officially became the Parish of St. Joseph Ambarawa in 1896, the Surakarta area, which was previously under the jurisdiction of the Ambarawa station (Stasi), was designated as the Stasi Surakarta. Catholic missionary activities (Missie-Katolik) in Surakarta grew significantly, beginning with the construction of a rectory (pastoran) by Father Cornelis Stiphout SJ in 1905.
A place of worship was later built in 1916 after efforts to raise funds and submit a request for financial assistance to the Netherlands. However, the name “Antonius” had to be included in the building’s designation, resulting in the church being officially named St. Antonius Church of Purbayan. Construction was completed and officially inaugurated in 1917, with Father Cornelis Stiphout SJ serving as the first priest of the Purbayan Parish.
This church served as a vessel of the Society of Jesus Mission to spread the Gospel, with a calling to care for those who are suffering, weak, and powerless.
St. Antonius Church is the oldest Catholic church in Surakarta. Architecturally, it features a Neo-Gothic style. The building’s layout is not entirely symmetrical, with an extension on the southern side. The facade is characterized by a gable roof and decorated with stained glass windows. The roofing follows the classic gable roof structure.
The flooring is made of terrazzo tiles, sized 16x16 cm, in monochromatic brown tones (dark brown, light brown, and cream), accented with black to form geometric patterns. The walls and windows are adorned with pilasters, showcasing influences from the Renaissance and Art Deco styles, which are characteristic of the Indische Empire Style.
