The Pantekosta Church of Lojiwetan was originally used as a clinic to combat a plague outbreak in the early 20th century. The building holds significant value for the Indonesian people, as it reflects how public health services were established by the residents of Surakarta during the Harloff era. It also carries cultural value in strengthening national identity by promoting awareness of healthy living.
During the reign of Paku Buwono X, a plague broke out in 1929, triggered by poor sanitation and the large population of rats carrying the virus. This deadly virus struck the community and began to spread around the Jebres Station area. Because of its high fatality rate, the saying “ill in the morning, dead by evening, and ill in the evening, dead by morning” emerged, which became known as pageblug—a Javanese term for a deadly epidemic.
This epidemic led Paku Buwono X to establish several treatment centers for the disease, one of which is located in Lojiwetan. This treatment center became the present Pantekosta Church.
The conversion of the Lojiwetan epidemic treatment center into a place of worship is estimated to have occurred around 1930.
