Religious Tourism Astana Oetara

Astana Oetara is a funeral area of Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Adipati Arya (KGPAA) Mangkunegara VI and their families, relatives and servants. This tomb has existed since 1928 when the body of Mangkunegara VI was laid for the first time in this cemetery. Ir. Sukarno who later became the First President of the Republic of Indonesia was known as the architect of Astana Oetara.

KGPAA Mangkunegara VI is the fourth son of Mangkunegara IV. Kanjeng Pangeran Arya (KPA) Dhayaningrat title was carried when he was 17 years old. After being confirmed as Pangkasa Mangkunegaran to replace his brother Mangkunegara V, KPA Dhayaningrat holds the title KGPAA Mangkunegara VI, which according to the palace tradition, the title should have given to the son of Mangkunegara V.

In the reign of the Mangkunegaran Temple, he succeeded in restoring the economic bankruptcy of Mangkunegaran Temple during Mangkunegara V’s reign. In addition, he also collected taxes of the Nederlandsch Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (a Dutch private railroad company) until when the colonial could not afford to pay for the Solo-Surabaya railroad confiscated as his own. It also became a landmark of his anti-Dutch attitude. Then, he also expanded the area of sugar cane plantations to two sugar factories in Tasikmadu and Colomadu.

Once the crown prince is old enough, he voluntarily abdicate the title himself.

In 2014, the Astana Oetara area was designated by the Surakarta City Government as a Cultural Heritage.
